Plug-in-based software that is hosted within a digital audio workstation.

Virtual instruments are usually played via a MIDI keyboard and emulate the sounds of real instruments, such as strings, grand piano, Hammond organ etc. Developments in computing processor power have seen further developments in the capabilities of virtual instruments.
