Definition

Virtual instruments are generally controlled via a MIDI input.

They emulate the sound of a wide range of instruments and are commonly used in recording studios. It is normal on a digital audio workstation for a special track to be created for a virtual instrument, which can be assigned a MIDI channel in order to control it.
