Definition

The measurement of the intrinsic noise in the output of a device in relation to the signal.

It is important to ensure the gain structure of a recording is well set up to maximise the level of the sound source during the recording. An audio track recorded at a low level is likely to be affected more by the relative noise level on the output of the track.
