A sequencer can record, edit and play back music.

Sequencers have been around for a long time. Early examples includes the player piano which would have a sequence of notes punched onto a roll of paper, which would be 'read' by the piano.

Nowadays sequencer generally refers to software used to record music, but it can also refer to the step sequencer where the user inputs data over a series of 'steps', normally subdivided into semiquavers.
