Definition
Ripieno is one of the elements of the Baroque concerto grosso. It describes the larger / main group of ensemble instruments.
The other concerto grosso elements include the:
- Concertino – describes the small group of soloists; and
- Basso continuo – describes the bass line and harmony.
In a concerto grosso, the small group of soloists (concertino) are combined and contrasted with the ensemble (ripieno).
