Off the beat

Definition

Notes played on the weaker beats, e.g. beats 2 and 4 in a 4/4 bar.

In this image, you will see there are rests on the 1st and 3rd beats, whereas there are notes on the 2nd and 4th beats - these are described as 'off the beat'.
