MP3 players play back mpeg-1 or mpeg-2 audio layer files, usually referred to as .mp3 files.
This file format is a compressed form of encoding for digital audio allowing larger audio files to be compressed into a smaller size. MP3 players have been around since the mid-1990s, although it was the entry of the iPod to the market in the early part of 2000s that led the way for a portable music revolution.
