Bowing

Definition

The production of sound by drawing the bow across the strings of a stringed instrument, e.g. violin, viola, cello or double bass. Bowing is also known as arco. The bow normally plays only one string at a time. When the bow plays on two strings at the same time it is known as double stopping.

Examples

Watch and listen to an example of a violin being bowed. At the start there is also double stopping (when the bow plays on two strings at a time).
