Original process for capturing recorded sound until around the mid-1920s.

Musicians would perform in front of a large flared horn that would funnel the sound waves onto a small thin diaphragm. The diaphragm had a stylus attached which imprinted the sound waves onto a cylinder or disc of soft material.
