Definition

A bar containing either 2, 3 or 4 beats.

When we listen to music, the beat or pulse will normally form groups of two, three or four.

In simple time we use the time signatures 2/4, 3/4 and 4/4 to display whether the music has 2, 3 or 4 beats in the bar. 4/4 can also be written as C, which stands for 'common time'.
